•Renmore AFC Soccer Club is running a Race Night in the Huntsman Inn College Road on Saturday March 9 to raise funds for the running of the soccer club. All are invited to attend, including anyone not directly involved in the club who would like to participate. The night will consist of a full race card of 10 races shown on large screen TVs with full tote facilities available. Following their cross-country success last week in Derry, Mayo AC's versatile masters women, plus a couple of men, competed at the new track in Athlone AIT in the Woodie’s DIY Indoor Masters track and field championships on Saturday last. For two of the women, it was their debut in this annual indoors event. Newport based Pauline Moran has been winning all over the place since joining the club and it was another gold medal display – after her Derrygold last week. She ran in three races, winning silver in the 800 metres and gold in both the 1500 and 3,000. Another debutante was Swinford based Margaret Glavey, who also ran three races in the W60 category and won all three – golds in 800, 1500, and 3,000. Glavey has also been in fine form and medallist at a number of distances on the road in recent years. Ann Murray has been a regular medal winner at these championships and she won gold in the 400 and silver in the 800 metres in the w45 category. Jim Gaughan returned to training in the New Year and competed in the M60 1500 metres where he won silver behind Martin McEvilly (GCH). Also taking place last weekend were the Kilbride 10k in Roscommon and the Enniscorthy 10k in Wexford. In Roscommon, Gerry Galvin was the first Mayo AC runner home finishing in ninth place in a time of 39.27, with Patrick Walsh taking first place in the M40 section in a time of 39.51. Ann Lennon came home in second place overall in the women’s race in a time of 41.04. In Enniscorthy, TJ McHugh in a time of 34.32 was the first Mayo AC runner over the line and finished in 19th place while Catherine Conway finished the women’s race in third place in a time of 36.14.

Right now the Olympics is a hot topic. There are lots of experts and analysts commenting on how our Irish athletes have performed in London 2012. The question is being asked as to what we as a nation could or should have done to improve the standard or quality of the athletes being sent to the Olympics every four years. Politicians such as Senator Eamon Coughlan have proposed that a programme should be rolled out in schools to introduce children to athletics and Minister of State for Sport and Tourism Michael Ring has emphasised the need for more money to be invested in our athletes in the future.

Galway athletes took three golds at the recent Junior and u-23 National Track & Field Championships in Tullamore.

Galway competitors were to the fore in most events at the Connacht Track and Field u-12 qualifiers in Dangan.

St Mary’s opened in 1912 with 60 boarders and 17 day boys. The first school sports there took place in 1928, and since then the college has produced many fine athletes in track and field. The first mention of All-Ireland sports in the annals of the school concerns Tom Fahy, who in 1938 set a new Irish record for the 12lb shot. In 1939 the school won its first Connacht Schools title; in 1943, it won three titles, four in 1946, and five in 1947. In that last year, one athlete, Martin Kilmartin, won three golds, and set records in both the triple jump and the long jump. In 1948 the college again won five titles, and in 1950 John Linnane set a new Irish record in the pole vault.

A number of Kilkenny junior athletes travelled to the National Junior Indoor Championships at the weekend.

Last Sunday at the Woodie’s DIY Masters Indoor Championships, Mayo AC came home with number of medals split between two athletes. In the female over 45 section, Ann Murray won a gold medal in the 3,000 metres and a bronze in the 400 metres. In the men’s over 55 section, Patrick Moran won the gold in the high jump event and took a bronze in the long jump.

Galway’s two Olympic hopefuls did not enjoy the best results in this year World Athletic Championships in South Korea.
